John Grautefestert - Porters and Housekeeping Coordinator
In 1965, John Grautefestert moved to Canada from Bochum, Germany, by way of ship. After living in Vancouver, and years of building experience as a carpenter, bee keeper, hospital staff, and in the restaurant industry, John joined the Sportsplex and has been with us for the past 36 years.
As the Porters and Housekeeping Coordinator at the Zatzman Sportsplex, John makes sure the facility is neat, tidy, and comfortable for guests. Beginning his career at the facility's canteen in 1983, John has met countless members and staff, and has seen many major events take place, with his favourites being the many graduations he's helped set up and tear down.
John is a bit of a hobbiest, with his favourite activities including woodworking, pin collecting, reading about health and wellness, listening to music, and gardening. He also loves to spend time with his children and grandchild, Alexander.
A day-in-the-life of John sees him arriving to the Sportsplex early (sometimes really early if there's lots of snow to clear!) and making a fresh pot of coffee, which he's never shy to share with his staff. When it comes to the new, revitalized Zatzman Sportsplex, John can't wait to see the new slide and hottub, and to get reacquainted with former member and meet the new ones.
John's family is his heart and soul, with German food coming in as a close second as his favourite thing. He loves to frequent the Gingerbread Haus in Halifax and is "obsessed" with schnitzel. He buzzes around the Sportsplex and can be hard to catch, but if you see John, make sure to stop and let him know how you're enjoying your experience. He loves customer feedback, and as our "can-do" guy, he's always willing to do what he can to make the building the best place it can be.
