Welcome to the Zatzman Sportsplex!

This month, Zatzman Sportsplex is proud to feature Paul Edmond in our Artists Alley - a Dartmouth-based acrylic painter whose vibrant works capture the beauty and movement of Atlantic Canada.

From Cape Breton to the Canvas

Originally from Dominion, Cape Breton, Paul first discovered painting as a child. “I started when I was about eight or nine years old,” he recalls. “I did it into my teens, then went into business school and the workforce. I got away from it for years.”

After retiring, Paul’s children encouraged him to pick up a brush again. One Christmas, they bought him paints and supplies -  a gift that reignited his love of art. “That was about seven years ago,” he says. “Since then, it’s just something I love doing. I’ll see something, snap a photo, and eventually come back to paint it.”

Nature, Memory, and Meaning

Much of Paul’s inspiration comes from nature’s fleeting beauty. “A lot of beautiful art comes from Mother Nature,” he explains. “But sometimes you’ve only got about 15 minutes to see it - nature can change so quickly! That’s why I take photos and paint later. Once it’s on canvas, it lasts.”

For Paul, painting is also about memory. He recalls a commission for an older couple celebrating their 70th anniversary: “Their daughter asked me to paint the home they’d lived in for years. Later, the woman developed Alzheimer’s. Each time she looked at the painting, she’d say, ‘I want to go home,’ not realizing she already was. That showed me just how deeply art can affect people differently - it is that powerful!”

On Appreciating Art

For those unsure how to approach art, Paul offers a simple advice: “Look with patience. Sometimes you see more the second time than you did the first. Art is subjective - what doesn’t speak to you may mean everything to someone else.”

See It Yourself

Paul’s work is on display in Artists Alley - First Level at the bottom of the stairs at Zatzman Sportsplex. We invite you to stop by, take a moment with each painting, look twice - you might notice something new each time!
